SPS 2011: Annapolis Trip -- U.S. Naval Academy

The St. Albans School of Public Service is in Annapolis for the day. This morning, we are visiting the United States Naval Academy. Our host, Naval Academy Political Science Stephen Wrage, has given us a tour of the Academy, one of the nation's service academies. At the Naval Academy, Dr. Wrage teaches a course on the Ethics of War, among other things, and he is sharing his expertise with us. Currently we are in a classroom with Dr. Wrage, discussing the "SEAL Team Ten" case study that we had previously discussed in the classroom at St. Albans several days ago. Essentially, the case study examines the dilemma faced by a Navy SEAL team in Afghanistan in 2005, after their covert position was discovered by Afghan goat herders (including a 14-year old). Should they have let the goat herders go and tried to abort the mission immediately? Killed the goatherds to try to complete the mission? Release the goat herders but still try to proceed with the mission? The discussion is lively and the opinions are varied!
