Teenagers don't typically like to wake up early, let alone during summer vacation, but this morning there were no complaints as the St. Albans School of Public Service was up bright and early for a trip to NBC Studios in Washington, D.C., as part of the studio audience for Meet the Press. The main topic -- the Congressional debate over the debt ceiling -- was a timely one from an SPS perspective, as SPS had visited Capitol Hill earlier in the week and both Senator Whitehouse and Congressman Pallone discussed that issue with us. Meet the Press host David Gregory first had a Q&A session with White House budget director Jack Lew, then moderated a discussion/debate between Democratic Senator Richard Durbin and Republican Senator Jim DeMint. The program closed with a round-table on the economy and jobs with a panel that included Ohio Governor John Kasich and President of the Urban League and former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial. David Gregory was gracious enough to speak to SPS after the show and take questions (see photo above left), and then on our way out of the studio Mayor Morial visited with the students (he is predicting that at least one SPS student will reach the Oval Office someday, showing a discerning eye for talent!).
